"Do you remember a time when a 2k crit was something to get excited about? Before the blood elves and the draenei entered the game? There was a time when a casual gamer would crap his jorts just thinking about leveling those last ten levels to 60. The game was harder, more hardcore, and often times a hell of a lot more inconvenient than the current version. But that was how the game was and we liked it, damnit. The game may not have been as easy but there are hordes (no pun intended) of people who would love to take another swig of that murky vanilla WoW air." ![]() Introduction: this may come as a shock to you (and to me as well honestly...) but a couple of us want to give Azeroth one last run-through. It has been almost 3 years since Saga quit the game and I can honestly say I miss those epic fights in Tarren Mill. I miss the endless onslaught at Crossroads and I especially miss being able to run through a living, breathing world. This will be extremely casual. No serious raiding, no serious pre-mades or any of that jazz. For those who are interested, we'll be trying to bring back some old-school flavor and attempt to re-create a Vanilla WoW experience. Info: Server: Stormreaver Faction: Alliance Goal: Establish a permanent Saga charter in WoW/experience the open-world PvP we all miss. Classes: Play anything you want (were all starting at level 1 though) Application: None required. Post here if you're interested. I will send a mass-e-mail when were up and running so you have a day or two to set up your accounts/install the game. |

Alright. Some of you are probably going to be in shock after reading this. "Ragana is playing WoW? But I thought he hated it!" Look, I am just surprised as you, but if he is giving it a chance, you should also give WoW a second chance; or even a first chance if you have never spent your time in Azeroth. Personally, I have been playing WoW since January 2005. I, like most other people playing, have taken breaks here and there during my WoW career. I stopped playing WoW for different games, but I always seem to come back. My MMO experience before WoW was rather young, having only played DAOC beforehand. I currently have 5 level 85s and I have experienced much of what WoW has to offer. I am only telling you this so hopefully you will believe what I am about to tell you about how WoW has changed and you should at least give it chance. Alright! Enough about me, more about you. First, I would like to tell you what all WoW has to offer you. I'm also not going to lie about somethings. If you have previously played, please hold back on using the rose-tinted goggles and hear me out. WoW has taken many changes both positive and negative. I would like to think that WoW has evolved or morphed into a game that can be enjoyed by all, rather than just the hardcore crowd. PvE: Now I know that PvE has never been one of Saga's priorities, but that may be different for you. You may really enjoy PvPing but have always wanted to dabble a little into the PvE side of thigns. PvE in WoW has remained competitive, enjoyable, and interesting just like it has been for the past 7 years. There is just only one big difference people seem to think about PvE. "WoW's PvE is too easy. I remember back in Naxx40 where we had to wipe all day and all night just to down the first boss! I remember when we had to get attuned for dungeons, and spend thirty minutes trying buffing up just to die again! That was the good ol' days!" I'm not going to lie to you. For the most part, WoW's PvE has been made slightly easier, or accessible. Trust me, these people really do not know what they are talking about. These people either do not raid anymore or just want people to think that they played Vanilla WoW. Want to know the difference between the raids then and now? Now the raids are actually fun. The mechanics Blizzard added in the game for the boss fights are just splendid and they provide hours and hours of fun time. You still have occasional "Don't stand in the fire!" type of mechanics, but a lot of new mechanics have been added. If you don't believe me, go watch a fight like Ragnaros for Molten Core, and then watch the Ragnaros fight in Firelands. See the difference? Next, I would like to tell you that there still is a challenge to the game. Although, I'm not a big fan of it, it might stand out to some people. You now have THREE different raid difficulties. The three are (listed in order from easiest to most difficult) Looking For Raid (I'll get to this..) Normal, and Heroic. Now you see a lot of the top guilds blowing past some of the normal mode content in a rapacious effort to get all of the best gear and server acknowledgement they can, but for most people it is not that simple. You will still have plenty of wipes, fights, and hours spent on normal mode. After you clear normal mode you go to heroic mode, which is noticeably difficult. This is where men( and women) are made. This is where the fights take on a whole new meaning and where you will spend the most time. I would go into more detail, but I'm guessing you already have a good idea of what a "hard mode" or "heroic mode" is. Now to what I mentioned earlier, the Looking for Raid (LFR) system. This is the easiest form of the raids you can do and it is very similar to the Looking for Dungeon system. You queue up as a Tank/Healer/DPS and get paired with 24 random strangers (well, if you do not queue with some friends) from across the Blizzard servers to fight the same bosses you would in a Normal or Heroic instance. This is fun, but the fights are much easier. If you are a casual player and do not really like to raid during set times of the week due to real-life conflicts, this might be perfect for you. The LFR system is great for those people who just want to see the bosses fall and get the fat loots from them. This may sound kind of boring, which it kind of is [to me], but this really stands out to the really casual player. Dungeons are also more fun for the same reasons that raids are, better mechanics. I am not going to go much more into detail because you can probably just infer from what I said about raids how the dungeons will be. They are shorter, fun, and rewarding. They also contain a Looking for Dungeon (LFD) system that is in most games. Remember grinding the same mobs over and over to level? Remember quests that were just boring and had little to no story involved? Remember when you would have to run all over a zone doing quests just to get less than a bar of experience? Well forget those memories because the questing system has been completely redone. One of the major changes that the latest expansion Cataclysm brought was the destruction of Old Azeroth and the bringing of New Azeroth after Deathwing destroyed it. Questing in the game is now really engaging and it tells a lot more of a story. Quests are not all "Kill 10 rats" and "Gather 4 nuts". Granted, they are still there, but now there are more engaging quests. The questing is not the same or attractive as SWTOR's, but if you remember leveling in Vanilla or early BC, you know how much a pain some of the zones were. Presently, you will get about 2-4 quests that are located in the same area of the map, complete them, turn them in, and get a new set. This is a traditional MMO trait, but it really is not that bad. Again, I'm not going to lie, it is kind of linear, but the game really isn't about questing. If you're looking for that I may suggest you to check out SWTOR. This quest revamp also made leveling a lot easier so you can reach level 85 and begin doing whatever you like. There are also numerous professions you can use to craft gear, gather materials, or make money. PVP:Ok! I know if you're reading this you will probably be looking for the PvP section and I'm not sure why I did not put it top, but that is neither here nor there (or is it). Anyhow, PvP still remains the same as it always has been. But currently, the PvP is a lot more balanced and I see a lot of activity in it. There have been a lot of new changes and additions to make group and solo pvp a lot more interesting. First, Battlegrounds. I'm not going to go into too much depth on these, because you probably already know or have a good idea what they are. Via the Battleground queue, you can queue up for several different battlegrounds or you can do a random battleground to get bonus rewards. On weekends there are battleground "Call to Arms" where you can queue for a certain battleground, which one is random, and get bonus rewards from doing it as you would a random. Secondly, Arena. I'm sure everyone who has played WoW before knows what Arena is. You create a team of 2, 3, or 5 people and duke it out all over Azeroth and get a rating. This is really self explanatory, but the better you are, the higher the rating. Similar to Arena is the new addition of Rated Battlegrounds (RBS), which was added in Cataclysm. If you are a pvper, RBGS and Arenas are what you will do. RBGS are similar to arena, but you form groups of 10-15 players and compete with other teams to see who is the best. In both Arenas and RBGs if you finish in top ranked players you will be given a mount or title depending on your ranking. This will help you establish yourself out in Azeroth and make people think you are a total badass. World PvP, is actually still around, if you start it. One of the best memories that old time WoW players (or even MMO players at that) have are the World PvP moments. The crossroads pillaging, the Tarren Mill - Southshore battles, and many other places. People say World PvP isn't around too much, but I believe if you and enough people get together and wreak havoc on an area, the other faction will come. I'm not going to lie, it is not as abundant as it once was, but still, if you really want it, you will get it. There are also these two "World Battlegrounds" that happen every 2 1/2 hours. This is Wintergrasp (WG) and Tol Barad (BD). Wintersgrasp isn't done much anymore because the rewards are outdated, but Tol Barad is still jammed pack of Horde and Alliance. The objective is to win the battleground to have the option of a daily quest hub appearing and a raid. These two things are worth fighting over. I'm sorry that the PvP section wasn't described very well, but I think a lot of it you have to experience yourself to get the full grasp of it. But in my opinion, PvP is the best thing WoW has going, and I really enjoy it. Social The community in WoW is nothing to brag about. WoW is probably one of the biggest MMOs, but there are still some dicks within the community that like to troll and think that it is funny to grief other people. Do your best to ignore these people and report them when you can. I made another section about this because I see the complaint of WoW being full of children a lot. It really isn't, it is just that the kids who play are the most noticed. WoW is full of like-minded, mature people who are always willing to talk and help out. In conclusion, I hope that maybe this small type up has maybe enticed you try out WoW for the first time, or to try it again. There are still numerous things I did not mention in this write-up, but for the most part, all major parts of the game was listed. There are a plethora of different mounts, pets, titles, and achievements you can get to make yourself stand out in the World of Warcraft. Now, it is ultimately up to you to decided whether or not you want to play WoW. I really hope that you will give the game a try because it has changed mainly for the good over the years, and even has a new expansion coming out this year to add EVEN MORE content to the game. There are plenty things for the casual, hardcore, or even average player to partake in. |

I registered and came in to see all of this - had some delusional hope from someone's repost of your initial post here about "Tarren Mill" fights - and remembered the old days when I first left DAoC. For a split second, I actually thought that the WoW server, "Stormreaver," was a new server with level ranges 1-60. Mega sigh when I just saw it was another level 85 server. Had high hopes. Nice forums you have here, Saga looks like a class A group of people. /salute BTW: the original post avatar looks like a friend I had years ago, Alan Armatys? heh. anyway. Good hunting on Stormreaver! Edited by Komaf, Jan 14 2012, 12:39 PM.

Ahh sorry bud, a lot of us are waiting for a Vanilla WoW server =/ Until then, all we can do is recreate a similar experience with like-minded people. On a brighter note, Saga is now up and running in-game! |
