Bought a new lens. Cat looked at me the wrong way and got shot for it. It was my first night taking close up shots, so I take it for what it's worth. Flikr kind of sucks, so it's a low res version of the original 25 megabyte picture. I got a new piece of kit yesterday that will double my "zoom" for macros, so I hope to take some insect shots this weekend.

That is amazing. I always wanted to give photography a try but it's an extremely expensive hobby from what I hear.
Post some more!

Thanks,
Tommy

It can get expensive, depending on how far you want to push the limitations of technology. I'm about $3000 in, and looking to pick up a telephoto lens that will be another $1600. My camera backpack weighs about 20 lbs, with just the essentials in it (no monopod or tripod).

That being said....

In all honesty, a kit worth about $250 could take some amazing shots (used equipment). The more you spend, the better you can shoot in low light, or at high speed, but patience and practice are worth more than any dollar amount can provide you with.

This guy (we've chatted through email a bit), uses a very inexpensive setup, and he takes brilliant shots. I'm nowhere near his caliber, even though I have a much more expensive (and bulky) kit. Kalimistuk

The last time I spoke to him, he was using an outdated, but highly respected, Panasonic FZ-50, an offbrand flash (383 I believe), and a couple Raynox (inexepensive) diopter lens attachments. I think his pictures speak for themselves. Take a look at the snowflake!

He's a hobbyist, and doesn't make a living from photography. He actually made a flash diffuser out of a Pringles chips can, to take a lot of those macros. Cost for the diffuser; $2. Just bear in mind, that to take the shots Mark does, a full size flash is essential, and LOTS of practice.

I might actually look into purchasing something of the sort. I been working on a book for a few years now and high quality photos would really add to the finished project. I guess Craigs list is the place to start hunting, we'll see if I can pick up something that's not terribly expensive.

By the way, those photos are simply amazing. I honestly never seen anything like it. That guy knows his stuff.
