For Nintendo, the Wii console sales slump was only a bump in the road.

In an interview with Reuters, President Satoru Iwata says the recent surge of Wii sales this holiday should quiet naysayers who claim the console is running out of gas.

"I think it's now safe to say the Wii has recovered from slowdown," he said. "But I'm not sure if it's prudent to use words like revival and recovery lightly before making absolutely certain we can maintain this momentum. So, I steer clear of such words today".

Nintendo announced yesterday the company sold over 3 million Wii consoles in the U.S. alone during the month of December. The DS handheld, meanwhile, set a new sales record in 2009, with sales possibly exceeding 10 million units in the U.S.

"It's a combination of factors," Iwata said of the Wii's surge. "Towards December, our software lineup got stronger. Also, the price cut certainly helped, although it is not the sole factor."

One piece of software Iwata is referring to is New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which has sold over 4 million copies since its launch in November.
